From Childhood to Adulthood in Updike's A&P Sammy is stuck in that troublesome progress among youth and adulthood. He is a nineteen-year-old clerk at an A&P, the hero in a story with a similar name. John Updike, the writer of A&P, composes from Sammy's perspective, making him the fundamental character as well as the primary individual storyteller.
